Crochet Scrap Yarn Blanket + Video

Are you ready to clear out your yarn stash and create something beautiful and functional? Are you looking for a meditative and relaxing crochet project to chill out with? Perhaps my crochet scrap yarn blanket can help!

You can use up all those leftover bits of yarn you have lying around and crochet a truly unique home decor piece. Not only that but if you’ve never tried out the cross hatch stitch then this is a great opportunity to check out this playful crochet technique. I say playful because it’s kind of on slant and with all the different colors it keeps you guessing how the color combos will look together. Can you tell I really enjoyed making this blanket?

For my scrap yarn blanket I used leftover yarn and scrap yarn - is there even a difference between the two?

My take is that leftover yarn is usually enough to wind into a small ball or cake. Yarn scraps are usually shorter pieces of yarn that are too short to wind into a ball. And I’m happy to say that both scrap yarn and leftover yarn can be combined to make something lovely. If you are using yarn scraps, you will want to make sure that you join the pieces together securely before continuing with the pattern.

Using up my yarn this way with all the different colors was incredibly fun to do and I loved seeing the different colors emerge with each row.

Scrap Yarn Blanket

Crochet Pattern

Size

This will vary depending on the amount of yarn you use but in my case I had enough yarn to make a lap blanket approx. 34” x 42” (60 rows)

Materials

  • Worsted weight (4) yarn

  • 6.00mm crochet hook

  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations (US terms)

sts - stitches

ch - chain

sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

sk - skip

tch - turning chain

Notes

I strongly recommend joining all your yarn leftovers and scraps together first and winding them into balls or cakes before you start. This way you don’t have to join as you work and struggle to decide which color to choose next - trust me, that’s what I did in the beginning and didn’t work on the blanket for months because I couldn’t decide on which color to use next.

This pattern uses the crosshatch stitch where the double crochet stitches are worked into the 3-chain segments created in each row. If you’ve made C2C crochet projects you’ll find that this is a very similar stitch.

Pattern

  1. ch 203, sk 2 ch (counts as dc), 2 dc in next ch, *sk 3 ch, sc in next ch, ch 3, dc in next 3 ch, rep from * to last 4 ch, sk 3 ch, sc in last ch, turn

  2. ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in first sc, *sk 3 dc, sc in first ch of ch 3, ch 3, dc in next 2 ch, dc in next sc, rep from * ending with sk 2 dc, sc in top tch, turn

Repeat Row 2 until you reach your desired size or you run out of yarn like I did 😅

Once your blanket is all stitched up all that’s left to do is weave any ends you might have and it’s ready to be enjoyed!
