C2C Cassette Tape Bag Pattern + Video

I’m an older millennial, which means I grew up listening to music on tapes and later CDs. The first tape I bought as a budding music aficionado was the Happy Nation album by Ace of Base. Because I was only 11 at the time I didn’t have money to buy all the albums I wanted (I had to save up months of allowances to buy one tape). My DIY solution was to listen to the radio and have a blank cassette ready to record on my little stereo. You might say this was an early version of playlist curation. These days I curate my playlists on YouTube Music but the inner 80s and 90s kid in me was in need of something nostalgic. Plus I wanted a new bag so I made a crochet c2c cassette tape bag!

After “discovering” C2C (corner to corner) last year and making projects like the solar system wall hanging and the Halloween squares, I just knew I needed to make a C2C bag. I knew I wanted to have a pixelated design and since I wanted something nostalgic and music-related it was like the stars aligned.

I did a quick google search to get pixel art cassette tape inspiration and then got to work creating my design in my graph paper notebook (did I mention I’m an older millennial?).

Cassette Tape Bag

Crochet Chart

Materials

  • Worsted weight (4) acrylic yarn - I used a combination of Bernat Super Value and Red Heart Super Saver yarns in various colors

  • Size 4.00mm and 3.50mm crochet hooks

  • (Optional) bag insert - I made my own but you can also purchase them

Gauge

C2C portion: 9 hdc clusters = 4”

Bag strap portion: 18 sc sts x 19 rows = 4”

Notes

The bag is made up of the front flap with the cassette design, a rectangle for the main bag, and a long wide strap to serve as the sides of the bag and the bag strap.

The front flap and main bag are both worked corner to corner making 2 hdc stitches per cluster using a 4.00mm hook.

The bag strap is worked in single crochet stitches using a 3.50mm hook keeping a tight tension.

Measurements

Front flap is approx. 15.5” x 11”

Rectangle for main bag is approx. 23.5” x 16”

Bag strap is approx. 60” x 3”

Assembly

Once I had all the parts finished I joined the front flap to the main bag rectangle with single crochet stitches so that there would be a ridge or hinge, giving the flap seam a little more definition. I folded the main bag, leaving about 3 inches to create the base/bottom of the bag, and aligned the ends of the bag strap to where the fold was and joined it all with single crochet stitches.

Below I’ve transferred my paper design so it’s easier to follow as well as a rough diagram of how to assemble the bag parts.
