Sandworm Scarf Crochet Pattern
I've had this idea in my head for a while, inspired by Beetlejuice, to make a crochet sandworm scarf. Initially I envisioned the scarf as being tubular and worked in rounds. But after making a few experimental prototypes I realized this would be so much better as a flat scarf. The tubular version was too thick and would result in an oversized scarf, which is not the look I was going for. However, I am holding on to that tubular idea for a different project.

Crochet Pattern
This sandworm scarf crochet pattern is suitable for all levels. The stitches used are in American terms.
Stitches and Techniques Used
st(s) - stitch(es)
sl st - slip stitch
ch - chain
tch - turning chain
dc - double crochet
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
dc2tog - double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)
inc - increase, make 2 stitches in the same space
magic ring
This pattern can be adjusted if you prefer to make a wider or narrower scarf. You can adjust the width by working more or less increase rows until you reach the desired width.
Materials
worsted weight (4) yarn, such as Bernat Super Saver or Red Heart Super Value in Black and White, approx. 3-4 oz in each color depending on how long you want your scarf to be
scrap yarn of similar weight in red, yellow, green
6.00mm crochet hook
4.00mm crochet hook
yarn needle for sewing and weaving ends
Scarf is worked flat in rows starting with the tail and ending with the heads. The scarf pictured in this pattern measures 127cm/50" in length and is 15cm/6" wide.
Sandworm - 6.00mm hook
Row 1: Starting with black, ch 4 (counts as dc), make 2 dc in first ch, turn (3 sts)
Row 2: ch 3, dc in same space as starting ch, dc in each st across and top of tch, turn (4 sts)
Repeat Row 2 until there are 16 sts, then work even as follows:
ch 2 (starting ch does not count as stitch from here on), dc in same space as starting ch and in each st across, do not dc in top of tch. Alternate between black and white every 8 rows until scarf measures or reaches desired length. End the last 8-row segment in white to make the inner head. Do not fasten off.
Inner Worm Head - 6.00mm hook
Row 1: With white, ch 2, dc2tog, dc across to last 2 sts, dc2tog, turn (14 sts)
Repeat Row 1 until there are 2 sts left. Fasten off and weave ends.
Outer Head, Top - 6.00mm hook
Leave a long starting tail for sewing later.
Row 1: With white, ch 20, dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in each st across, turn (18 sts)
Row 2: ch 2, dc2tog, dc across to last 2 sts, dc2tog, turn (16 sts)
Repeat Row 2 until there are 2 sts left, switching to black for one row at Rows 5 and 8. Fasten off and weave ends.
Green Lips: With green yarn, draw a loop in the edge stitches of Row 1, ch 1, sc in same space then evenly sc in the edges of the Outer Head rows until you reach the opposite end of Row 1. Fasten off and weave ends
Outer Head, Bottom - 6.00mm hook
Row 1: With white, ch 18, dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in each st across, turn (16 sts)
Repeat the same as Top part.
Red Eyes - 4.00mm hook
Do not make a chain at the start of each round and do not turn at the end of each round. Use a stitch marker to mark the first or last stitch in each round.
Round 1: with red, make 6 sc in magic ring (6 sts)
Round 2: inc in each st around (12 sts)
Round 3: in the first st make (hdc, dc, hdc), sc in next 4 sts, in next st make (hdc, dc), in next st make (dc, hdc), sc to end, sl st to first st. Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.
Yellow Eyes - 4.00 hook
Do not make a chain at the start of each round and do not turn at the end of each round. Use a stitch marker to mark the first or last stitch in each round.
Round 1: With black yarn, make 6 sc in magic ring (6 sts)
Round 2: Switch to yellow yarn, inc in each st around (12 sts)
Round 3: in the first st make (hdc, dc, hdc), sc in next 5 sts, in next st make (hdc, dc, hdc), sc to end, sl st to first st. Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.
Assembly
Sew the yellow eyes to the inner head and the red eyes to the outer head. Align the top and bottom parts of the outer head so the inner head sticks out and sew. Weave in any ends and your sandworm scarf is done!
