How to Crochet Zigzag Stitch Video Tutorial

In this quick crochet tutorial, I’ll be showing you how to crochet the zigzag stitch. You might also know the zigzag stitch as the single crochet chevron stitch and the zigzag ripple stitch. This stitch pattern adds texture and a beautiful zigzag or wave-like effect to your crochet projects.

Zigzag Crochet Stitch

Pattern Notes

For this example I’m using a size 4.00mm crochet hook and some worsted weight cotton yarn in 3 colors. You can alternate the colors every row, every four rows, or just keep it a solid color.

This stitch uses multiples of 11 sts plus 1 and an additional chain for the foundation chain.

In this example I’m starting with a foundation chain of 35. To break it down, 33 is a multiple of 11, plus 1 is 34, and the additional chain gives us a total of 35 chains in the foundation chain.

Zigzag Stitch Instructions

ch 35 or use multiples of 11 sts plus 1 and an additional chain for the foundation chain.

Row 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, * 1 sc in the next 4 ch, sk 2 ch, 1 sc in the next 4 ch, 3 sc in the next ch, repeat from * and finish the row with 2 sc in the last ch, turn

Row 2: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, * 1 sc in the next 4 sts, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 3 sc in the next st, repeat from * and finish the row with 2 sc in the last st, turn

Repeat Row 2 until you reach desired length.

The zigzag stitch is great for making scarves, blankets, bags, tops, pillows, dishcloths, the list goes on! You can see it’s a very versatile stitch that is eye-catching and adds dimension and playfulness to crochet projects like the bacon blanket I made a few years ago using a variation of the zig zag or ripple stitch but instead of single crochet it’s double crochet stitches.

Depending on the type of yarn and hook size you use you could make a fabric that is sturdy and durable or a fabric that is soft with a lovely drape like my lacy chevron top I made.

This stitch is also reversible so you don’t have to worry about which is the wrong or right side. And to better showcase this stitch pattern I recommend blocking your work when you’re done.
