Fiesta Crochet Vest + Video

Are you looking for a way to add a touch of style and warmth to your wardrobe? If so, you're in luck! The Fiesta Crochet Vest is a great way to do just that. This vest is made up of a series of simple V stitches that work up quickly. Not only is it easy to make, but the results are beautiful and the V stitch pattern combined with the different colored rows creates a unique texture and look.

In this blog post, I'll show you the steps I took to make this crochet vest for myself. And, if you are wondering where this inspiration for this vest came from, well it was inspired by a dog sweater I made for my dog, Colas.

It was my first time making a crochet dog sweater so it was all done freehand and with quite a bit of fudging and tweaking as I went along. I'm definitely going to try making more dog sweaters and hopefully make up a pattern as well.

And why Fiesta? Well, because when you have such a vibrantly colored vest like this you can’t help but feel like celebrating!

Size

This vest measures approx. 36" at the hips / bottom ribbed edge (without stretching), 42" around at the armholes, and 21" from bottom ribbed edge to shoulder.

To adjust the sizing for your measurements you will work the ribbing portion of the pattern until it meets your measurements but being mindful to leave 1-2" of stretch / ease. The vest naturally tapers out from the ribbed edge and expands so you'll also want to keep this mind if you're worried that the ribbed edge isn't big enough (it likely is, I learned this the hard way).

You can make the vest longer or shorter by working more or less rows between the ribbed edge and the armholes.

Materials

  • Worsted weight (4) acrylic yarn, I'm using Bernat Super Value in: DK Heather, Mint, Lilac, Masala, Baby Pink, Hot Blue, and Bright Yellow

  • 4.50mm and 5.00mm crochet hooks

  • Stitch marker

  • Yarn needle

  • Measuring tape

Abbreviations (US terms)

ch - chain

st(s) - stitch(es)

sc - single crochet

BLO - back loop only

sl st - slip stitch

dc - double crochet

sk - skip

rep - repeat

hdc - half double crochet

Gauge

Worked in V-stitch 4" square = 7 stitches x 8 rows

Notes

The vest is made up of 2 pieces, front and back. It is worked from the bottom up starting with the ribbed edge. Once the front and back pieces are finished, the vest is sewn together at the sides and shoulders followed by a half double crochet edging along the neckline and armholes. Blocking is not necessary but depending on the type of yarn you use it might be good to do so.

Decreases are done in the front piece neckline edge only.

Use a stitch marker to note which is the right side of the vest since there really is no wrong or right side to the pattern. But you'll want to know which sides to hide your yarn tails if you're using multiple colors.

When adjusting the size, note that the pattern stitches are made up of multiples of 2 so you'll want to make sure your ribbed edge adds up to a multiple of 2.

Pattern

You can use the following color sequence or use your own. I'll indicate in some of the pattern rows which color I'm using just for point of reference but this will depend on your color choices.

Bottom Ribbed Edge

With 4.50mm hook and DK Heather

Row 1: ch 8, sc in 2nd from hook and each ch across, turn (7 sts)

Rows 2-62: ch 1, working in BLO sc in each st, turn

Switch to size 5.00mm hook

Turn piece 90 degrees so row ends are facing. Ch 1, evenly sc in each row end, turn (62 sts)

Cut yarn and weave ends.

Front Piece

With 5.00mm hook join yarn in the first stitch of the ribbed edge.

Row 1: [Mint] ch 3 (counts as dc), *sk 1 st, 2dc in next st (V-st), rep from * to last 2 ch, sk 1 st, 1dc in last st, turn

Row 2: [Lilac] ch 3, *sk 2 sts, 2dc between 2nd skipped st and next st, rep from * to last 2 sts, sk 1 st, 1dc in top of turning ch, turn

Repeat Row 2 for another 19 rows (approx. 12" total from bottom edge). In my case I ended on the color Masala.

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Armhole

After completing the last row, turn your work and skip 4 V-stitches. Join yarn in the 2nd dc of the 4th skipped V-stitch.

Row 1: [Baby pink] ch 3, work V-stitches across leaving the last 4 V-stitches unworked, turn (20 V-stitches)

Rows 2-8: ch 3, continue in established pattern

In my case, I ended up on the color Hot Blue with the wrong side facing at the end of the row.

Neckline - Left Side

Row 1: [Yellow] ch 3, work 8 V-stitches across leaving remaining stitches unworked, turn (8 V-stitches)

Row 2: [Mint] (decrease row) ch 3, dc in the first st, work V-stitches across, turn (7 V-stitches)

Row 3: [Lilac] ch 3, continue in established pattern (7 V-stitches)

Row 4: [Masala] (decrease row) ch 3, dc in the first st, work V-stitches across, turn (6 V-stitches)

Rows 5-9: ch 3, continue in established pattern (6 V-stitches)

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Neckline - Right Side

Row 1: [Yellow] With right side facing, skip 4 V-stitches in the center of the vest and join yarn in the next dc st, ch 3, work 8 V-stitches across, turn (8 V-stitches)

Row 2: [Mint] (decrease row) ch 3, work V-stitches across to last V-stitch, 1dc in V-stitch, 1dc in top of turning ch, turn (7 V-stitches)

Row 3: [Lilac] ch 3, continue in established pattern (7 V-stitches)

Row 4: [Masala] (decrease row) ch 3, work V-stitches across to last V-stitch, 1dc in V-stitch, 1dc in top of turning ch, turn (6 V-stitches)

Rows 5-9: ch 3, continue in established pattern (6 V-stitches)

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

This is what the vest looks like after completing the front piece left side, right side facing:

Back Piece

Repeat the same steps as the Front Piece until you reach the Armhole.

Join yarn same as the Front Piece and work in established pattern for 15 rows total. In my case I ended on the color Bright Yellow.

Shoulder - Right Side

[Mint] Similar to the Neckline, work 6 V-stitches across and leave remaining stitches unworked, turn (6 V-stitches)

[Lilac] Work one more row of 6 V-stitches across. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Repeat for the Left Side shoulder.

Assembly and Finishing

Join the side and shoulders together with your preferred join method. I used an invisible / mattress stitch to sew everything together.

For the armhole and neckline edging I joined the color DK Heather. Where you join your yarn isn't important but I like to join in the underarm corner of the armhole and for the neckline, somewhere along the back. Once joined, ch 1 and evenly hdc acround each st and row end. Join with sl st. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
