Crochet Mushroom Bookmark Pattern
It’s been a while since I found an animated series that made me laugh out loud and filled me with joy, almost in the same way that Adventure Time would do.
The series Jason and I have been really enjoying of late is called Delicious in Dungeon.
It’s goofy, corny, silly, and filled with cooking adventures. The characters are endearing and well-developed considering it’s a series about finding food to eat in a dungeon!
What I love is the creativity in the preparation of monster dishes and the animation holds a very cozy and nostalgic feel for me.
But how did Delicious in Dungeon lead to a crochet mushroom bookmark?
Well, aside from enjoying anime and cooking, we also love learning about plants. I say “we” but it’s really Jason, he’s the green thumb here and the reason I even made the bookmark.
You see, Jason has a book about mushrooms that he was reading the other day. He got up from reading and set the book, open and face down on the table. No bookmark or anything!
After recovering from the shock of finding a book in such a painful position I knew I had to do something.
Inspired by the walking mushroom from the Delicious in Dungeon series intro, I came up with a pattern to make a mushroom bookmark!
Selecting the yarn
Let’s talk about the kind of yarn to use for this bookmark. I’ve opted for a fine-weight yarn so I can make a small mushroom but you can make this using heavier weights like DK or worsted-weight yarn, which will result in a bigger mushroom. Use the appropriate hook size if you’re using a heavier weight, for example, if I were to make this bookmark with worsted weight I’d probably go with a 3.75mm crochet hook.
When it comes to colors, I chose the classic red mushroom cap with the white spotted look. I just think it’s such an iconic mushroom thanks to Nintendo.
Of course, you can change this and use different colors. Mushrooms come in so many different colors so feel free to play around with your yarn color choices. Just as an idea, in my shroom shrug pattern, I went with a blewit, a purple-y mushroom, and a boletus, a brown and tan mushroom.

Round 1: in magic ring sc 6
Round 2: inc in each st (12 sts)
Round 3: complete the following [inc in next st, sc in next st] x 6 (18 sts)
Round 4: complete the following [inc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] x 6 (24 sts)
Rounds 5-7: sc in each st around
Use white yarn to cross-stitch spots on the mushroom cap.
Add a little polyfil to the mushroom cap but be careful not to overstuff.
Round 8: working in BLO complete the following [sc in next 2 sts, dec] x 6 (18 sts)
Join Tan yarn at the end of Round 8
Round 9: complete the following [sc in next st, dec] x 6 (12sts)
Rounds 10-12: work even
Add a little polyfil to the stem.
Round 13: working in BLO dec x 6 (6 sts)
Before moving on to the next step, slip stitch into the second and fifth single crochet so that the hook and working yarn are in the center of the mushroom stem bottom. Do not cut the yarn.
Crochet the number of chains needed to measure the length of your book. In my case, the length is approx. 8” and I made 53 chains. Do not cut the yarn.
Mushroom Bulb
Round 1: work 6 sc in the 2nd ch from hook
Round 2: inc in each st around (12 sts)
Rounds 3-4: sc in each st around (12 sts)
Round 5: dec x 6 (6 sts)
Cut the yarn and leave a long tail to weave in the ends into the bulb and use the rest of the yarn to flatten the base of the mushroom stem, read on for instructions on how to do this.
Flattening the base
You can either tie a knot at the end of the yarn or leave a little strand to weave in after, then, insert the needle around the center of the stem base and bring it through toward the top of the mushroom cap.
Tip: Try to bring the tan yarn up through one of the white spots to help hide the yarn.
Gently tug on the yarn until you’re happy with how the stem base looks.
Then just weave in all the ends.
