Non-Slip Slipper Soles for Crochet Slippers

For a while I had been wanting to experiment on slipper soles with the non-slip rubber coating called Plasti Dip - I was inspired by a post on All About Ami where Stephanie covered the soles on a pair of toddler booties (so cute!). Years later during a trip to my local hardware store I came across a container of Plasti Dip. It wasn't the spray kind but that didn't stop me from grabbing one in black. Didn't know what I would do with it but figured black would be a versatile color.

My chance to play with the rubber goop finally came when I made a pair of slippers for Jason (check out the post here). Originally I was going to make felted soles to make the slippers more durable but seeing as I had black Plasti Dip already on hand I made Plasti Dip Soles for crochet slippers

I scoured the internet for instructions on how to use the stuff but couldn't find what I specifically wanted to know - could I simply brush the liquid directly over crochet fabric? In the end I decided to just go for it and hope for the best. I cut out a template to look like bear paws and with a cheap paint brush I started to apply even coats over the soles. I let each layer dry 30 minutes before adding another layer - in total I put on 3 coats. It was a very messy and super smelly experience with a few blemishes but overall I'm so delighted with the outcome! I want to use Plasti Dip again, just need some ideas.

Some tips:

  1. Work in a well-ventilated area because this stuff STINKS.

  2. Wear rubber gloves and cover your work surface.

  3. The rubber dries very quickly so work fast but carefully.

  4. If you're using a stencil make sure it doesn't move around, which I should have done (sigh).

1. Position stencil

2. Apply a coat of Plasti Dip

3. Let dry and repeat!

Have you used Plasti Dip for crochet slippers before and if you have what did you use it for? Leave a comment below, I'd love to know!
