My First Pair of Crochet Mittens!

For the past month or so I’ve been working on a pair of mittens. I tried different designs and made a few versions until I was happy with the shape. First I tried starting from the top down using the same sprial method as making amigurumi. Then I tried making a cuff first and working my way up, making increases and decreases, but the shape looked a little lopsided and the cuff was too loose. Finally I decided to use a smaller hook for the cuff, which I made with tighter stitches in the back loop only, then used a larger hook for the main piece and only made decreases until the very end.

Materials

-Worsted weight yarn, 100g in colour of choice

3.25mm Clover Crochet Hook and 4.5mm Clover Crochet Hook

-Stitch marker

Stitches (American Terminology)

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

BLO – back loop only

inc – increase (2 sts in same st)

dec – decrease (sc 2 tog)

The cuff is worked in rows and the hand portion is worked in continuous rounds (do not join or turn at the end of the round). Use stitch marker to keep track of beginning/end of each round. You can easily adjust the size by increasing or decreasing the number of rows in the cuff and the number of stitches in the rounds. Example – the cuff for these mittens is made up of 30 rows so the beginning round will be 30 single crochet stitches. If your mittens are bigger/smaller, the number of rows you end up with will determine the number of stitches in the beginning round – keep this in mind when calculating your rounds.

Starting with size 3.25mm hook.

Ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch 1, turn.

Row 1: sc in BLO, ch 1, turn (9 sts)

Repeat until you have desired size – in my case I made 30 rows total.

Join ends with single crochet to form a seam. Do not fasten off.

Switch to larger size hook.

Round 1: pick up a sc in each row – in this pattern it will be 30 sts to form the first round.

Rounds 2-3: sc around (30 sts)

Round 4: [sc in next 4 sts, inc in next] repeat 6 times (36 sts)

Rounds 5-8: sc around (36 sts)

Round 9: [sc in next 5 sts, inc in next] repeat 6 times (42 sts)

Rounds 10-13: sc around (42 sts)

Creating the thumb hole…

Round 14: sc around and skip last 6 sts.

Round 15: skip first 6 sts [sc in next 4 sts, inc in next] repeat 6 times (36 sts)

Rounds 16-22: sc around (36 sts)

Round 23: [sc in next 4 sts, dec] repeat 6 times (30 sts)

Rounds 24-29: sc around (30 sts)

Round 30: [sc in next 3 sts, dec] repeat 6 times (24 sts)

Round 31: [sc in next 2 sts, dec] repeat 6 times (18 sts)

Round 32: [sc in next st, dec] repeat 6 times (12 sts)

Round 33: dec 6 times (6 sts)

Fasten off and sew opening shut.

Thumb

Round 1: Pick up 12 sc in skipped sts from Rounds 14 & 15 (12 sts)

Rounds 2-7: sc around (12 sts)

Round 8: dec 6 times (6 sts)

Round 9: dec twice and fasten off.

    1. Thank you! I used to wear gloves all the time and couldn’t get used to mittens until my mom bought me a pair with a liner that had the fingers divided (think of a glove inside a mitten haha).
