Sperm Whale Amigurumi

It seems that after making the giant squid I fell into a sort of obsession with wanting to make more sea creatures. I think maybe it has to do with our trip to Hawaii where we spent a lot of time in the ocean, swimming with the fishes, turtles, dolphins, and manta rays. I knew a crochet sea creature needed to happen. A sperm whale amigurumi, perhaps?

The Hawaiian trip inspired me to crochet more sea creatures because I think they are super awesome, breathtakingly beautiful, and so damn cool.

I mean, look at these mandibles! By the way, did you know I also made a manta ray? I named him Mortimer and you can find the crochet manta ray here.

There was one creature we didn't get to snorkel with, or even come close to - a whale. Though we did spot several of them from the rocky beaches on the east coast. Now, I know sperm whales don't actually visit Hawaiian waters but I think they are my favorite kind of whale. This could be because of the lovable Disney character, Willie the Operatic Whale. If I could swim with any whale, I'd choose a sperm whale. Just look at sperm whales sleeping! Which is why for my most recent project I chose to crochet a sperm whale amigurumi.

I had a hard time with the flukes - wanted them to start as two separate pieces and then join to form the body of the whale. But I just didn't like the way it looked so instead I made the body a separate piece and then sewed on the flukes.

I hope you enjoy making this amigurumi whale as much as I did, and if you have any questions or need clarification let me know.
