Chain Chomp Keychain Crochet Pattern

I am easily distracted and I procrastinate a lot.

I was on Pinterest (naturally) when I came across a key chain cozy in the shape of a fish. This was enough to make me think of Super Mario Bros and instead of finishing the hundred other projects I've got going, I decided to make a crochet Chain Chomp keychain!

Chain Chomp Keychain Crochet Pattern

Materials

  • Worsted weight (4) yarn such as Caron Simply Soft in Black

  • 3.00mm crochet hook

  • White and black felt

  • Sewing needle and thread

  • Yarn needle

  • Key chain

  • Pliers

Abbreviations (US terms)
sts - stitches
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
inc - increase (2 sc in the same st)
dec - decrease (sc 2 sts together)
sl st - slip stitch

First, crochet the body. Make two pieces.

Round 1: start 6 sc in ring, do not join, turn

Round 2: ch 1, inc in each st, turn (12 sts)

Round 3: ch 1, [inc, sc] to end, turn (18 sts)

Round 4: ch 1, [inc, sc in next 2 sts] to end (24 sts)

Cut the yarn and leave a long tail for sewing. Make the second piece and weave in the ends.

Assembling the Chain Chomp Keychain

  1. With a small amount of white felt, cut out a row of small triangles to make the teeth.

  2. Sew the felt onto the inside (wrong side) of the mouth with a needle and thread.

  3. Cut out the eyes with white and black felt and sew those on as well.

  4. With a yarn needle, sew completed pieces together, making sure your key fits inside.

  5. For the chain, I bought a key chain from the dollar store and took it apart with pliers so I'd be left with just the chain.

  6. Sew the chain to the key cozy and you're done!
