Traditional Granny Square Pattern + Video Tutorial

What image comes to mind when you hear the word “crochet”? If you suddenly pictured a colorful square reminiscent of 70s boho style, you’re thinking of the traditional granny square.

Granny squares are everywhere and they don’t seem to be going out of style. They’re so versatile and functional that I cannot resist the urge to constantly think of new granny square projects.

If you’ve ever been curious to try your hook at this quirky yet stylish classic then I’m so glad you’re here because I want to share with you how to crochet a granny square.

What is a granny square?

Despite its name, this crochet classic is not exclusive to grandmas. The granny square is a building block that makes the basis of so many crochet projects, from blankets to garments and even stuffed toys. A traditional granny square is typically made up of clusters of double crochet stitches and chain spaces making it a great choice when you want to relax and enjoy mindless crochet.

What materials do I need to make a granny square?

Any yarn and hook will do and it just depends on the project you’re making. If you’re making a blanket you’ll want to use worsted weight or heavier weight yarn and a larger hook. But if you’re making a garment or accessory you can use lighter weight yarn with a smaller hook. For this tutorial, use the yarn and hook of your choice. You can use multiple colors or keep the square a solid color, it’s up to you!

Let’s make a granny square!

To begin, you usually start with a ring, my preferred method is with a magic ring. From there, it's a matter of working clusters of double crochets separated by chain spaces, gradually increasing the size of your square.

Notes

  • This granny square, despite its name, is worked in the round.

  • Do not turn at the end of each round.

  • The starting chain does not count as a stitch.

Abbreviations (US Terminology)

ch - chain

st - stitch

ch-sp - chain space

dc - double crochet

hdc - half double crochet

Round 1: In a magic ring, ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), [dc 3, ch 2] x 3, dc 3, hdc into the first st.

Round 2: ch 2, dc 3 into space under the hdc, * in the next ch-sp work [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3], repeat from * to last ch-sp, dc 3 in last ch-sp, hdc into first st.

Round 3: ch 2, dc 3 into space under the hdc, * dc 3 in the next space between clusters, in next ch-sp work [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3], repeat from * to last ch-sp, dc 3 in last ch-sp, hdc into first st.

Continue adding more rounds in the same way until you have your desired square size or the number of rounds listed in your pattern.

There are so many project ideas for granny squares - which will you make first?
