Hashtag Granny Square Crochet Pattern for Blankets

I think I've mentioned before that sometimes I get random project ideas and this one is no exception. Hashtags are such a big part of our culture these days that I thought, why not crochet it?

I toyed with the idea of hashtag coasters or a purse but those projects seemed too small and would be over in a short time.

A crochet blanket on the other hand takes time and commitment. Of course, I didn't want to spend too much time on this blanket so I chose to take the pixel approach and make several large granny squares, which I would later join.

The Design

I thought of making the blanket in black and white, with white as the background. I quickly realized this would potentially become boring so I decided to add color. The hashtag would be some sort of vibrant color against a white background.

I also didn't want to buy more yarn when I already had so many beautiful skeins crammed into my yarn shelves so I decided to use different colors and make it an ombre hashtag. I opted for a black background to make the colors really pop.

The Granny Squares

The pattern for the square is simple and works up quickly.

Size

Each square measures approx. 8x8"

Materials

Worsted weight (4) yarn (see Pattern Notes below)

-6.50mm crochet hook

-Yarn needle for finishing ends.

Pattern Notes

With the exception of Rnd 1, the starting chain always counts as the first stitch.

For the contrasting colors you'll need one 7oz/197g skein of worsted weight yarn for each color, or about 1oz of yarn per square.

For the black squares and for joining later you'll need three 14oz skeins of worsted weight black yarn.

Here are the number of squares for each color:

  • 33 in black

  • 2 in color A (White)

  • 5 in color B (Red Heart Super Saver - Aruba Sea)

  • 2 in color C (Red Heart Super Saver - Jade)
