Crochet Donut Pattern + Video

I may or may not have started this project because I’m trying to cut back on sugar but needed to somehow curb my cravings. So I designed a cute little donut amigurumi crochet pattern.

This little donut can be used as play food, décor, a keychain, or it could be turned into a fashion accessory. This is the beauty of amigurumi crochet projects, they could have many different functions!

The pattern for this donut amigurumi is suited for beginner crocheters who have some experience with working in the round.

The pattern for this donut is available for free below. You can also purchase the inexpensive and ad-free PDF version of the pattern in my shop, Etsy and Ribblr so you can print it and have it handy as you work.

Notes

This amigurumi donut is made up of two pieces:

  1. The donut base

  2. The icing

The icing is sewn onto the donut base after the sprinkles have been stitched on. This pattern is worked in continuous rounds, do not join or turn at the end of each round. Use a stitch marker to keep track of which round you’re on.

There are variations you can make with this donut amigurumi crochet pattern like using different colors for the icing or using a different sized hook and yarn to make a smaller or bigger donut.

Donut Base

With A, ch 12, sl st to first ch to form a ring

Round 1: ch1 (does not count as st) sc in same sp as sl st, sc in each ch around, do not sl st or turn (12 sts)
Round 2: sc in each st around

Round 3: complete the following [inc, sc in next st] x 6 (18 sts)

Round 4: complete the following [inc, sc in next 2 sts] x 6 (24 sts)

Round 5: complete the following [inc, sc in next 3 sts] x 6 (30 sts)

Rounds 6-8: sc in each st around

Round 9: complete the following [dec, sc in next 3 sts] x 6 (24 sts)

Round 10: complete the following [dec, sc in next 2 sts] x 6 (18 sts)

Round 11: complete the following [dec, sc in next 1 st] x 6 (12 sts)

Round 12: sc in each st around

Fasten off and leave tail to sew seam. Stuff with polyfil as you sew the inside seam shut.

Icing
With B, leaving a long tail for sewing later, ch 14, sl st to form a ring

Round 1: ch1 (does not count as st) sc in same sp as sl st, sc in each ch around, do not sl st or turn (14 sts)

Round 2: complete the following [inc, sc in next st] x 7 (21 sts)

Round 3: complete the following [inc, sc in next 2 sts] x 7 (28 sts)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Using scrap yarn in different colors, sew sprinkles onto the icing portion of the donut.

To make sure your stitches don’t come lose, leave a little bit of yarn at the start when you first thread through the icing so that you can tie a knot with the yarn tail when you’re done stitching each color:

Once you’ve got your sprinkles on the icing, sew the icing to the top of the donut in the center and in the outer stitches.

And your donut amigurumi is done!

Here I’ve added a bead chain to one of the donuts so it can be used as a keychain:

And here I’ve added a simple silver chain to a smaller version of this donut amigurumi so I can wear it as a necklace. This smaller version was made with fingering weight (1) cotton yarn and a size 3.00mm crochet hook:
