Mesh Crochet Top Pattern

It seems as though over the past weekend summer decided to get serious. It's now hot enough that we actually turned on the AC last night after a lot of, "Boy it's hot!" and "Is anyone else hot? I'm hot. Are you hot?"

It was also last night, after we cooled down with delicious cold air, that I finished this incredibly easy mesh crochet top:

I cannot express how easy it was to make this and how little time it took.

Up until two days ago (when I started working on the top) I had not created actual clothing. I've mostly stuck with cute amigurumi and in the past, I have made pieces of clothing but I followed a pattern from a book or blog. This time I wanted to design and create my first wearable item, which is why the pattern is so simple, and best of all it's perfect for this sudden summer heat.

Mesh Crochet Top Pattern

The great thing about this top is that you can adjust the size very easily. I wanted a loose and drape-y feel, but not too baggy.

For the length, I simply held up the piece as I worked on it to see how it fit - keep in mind that with a mesh stitch the fabric will hang longer when it's held up.

The top is two separate pieces (front and back) that I later sewed together.

I used less than 4 balls (40g each) of cotton/polyester blend yarn and a 4.50mm crochet hook.

The stitch I used is called the plain trellis stitch. I tried to figure out the gauge for this project but it's my first time so I hope this makes sense:

10 rows and 4 trellis stitches = 4" x 4"

The foundation is worked in multiples of 4 chains plus 3 and an additional 3 chains for the foundation chain.

Make 2 pieces

Ch 83 or the number of chains to meet your desired measurements

Row 1: sc in 6th ch from hook, [ch 5, skip 3 ch, sc in next st] repeat to end.

Row 2: [ch 5, sc in next 5 ch arch] repeat to end.

Repeat row 2 until you are happy with the length. In my case, I did 42 rows in total or approx. 21" in length and 19" across.

Cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembling the Top

To assemble, lay the pieces flat with foundation ends together - I decided to make this the neck/shoulders portion of the top.

Align the sides and with the yarn tail, sew the seams approx. 10" or 20 rows up.

For the shoulders I sewed approx. 3", or 3 trellis stitches.

Weave in the ends and you're ready to show off your crochet mesh summer top!
