Bacon and Egg Crochet Pattern

One of my favorite things to eat for breakfast is bacon and eggs. Could be from all those lazy Sunday mornings getting up to fry delicious bacon and practice the art of sunny side-up eggs with the perfect yolky center.

Actually, if I could eat that every day I probably would but because I care about my body I don't. Still, the sight of a plate of eggs and bacon brings an instant smile to my face and I thought, wouldn't my fave breakfast make for some fun and cheery art? On the menu: Bacon and Egg Crochet Pattern.

This was the first attempt at making crochet bacon. I wasn't crazy about it because it just didn't have that fried, crispy look to it. Plus, the light pink yarn made it look a little too uncooked for my taste. So with some strategically placed increase and decrease stitches along the rows I achieved the shape I was looking for.

I think my favourite part of this project was adding the eyes and mouth. To say that I had fun crocheting this would be an understatement. I was literally laughing when I started stitching the arms and I got to this point:

Egg White

Note that you can play around with the increases and single crochet stitches to create different egg white shapes so the total number of stitches at the end of each round isn’t important as long as you’re making a set of increases followed by a set of single crochet or slip stitches.

Round 1: make 6 sc in magic ring or ch 2 and make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

Round 2: inc in each st.

Round 3: sl st in next st, 3 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, inc in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st, sc in next st, inc in next st.

Round 4: sl st in next st, inc in next 4 sts, sc in next 4 sts, inc in next 5 sts, sc in next 4 sts, sl st in next 2 sts.

Round 5: sl st in next st, inc in next 5 sts, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in next 4 sts, sc in next st, inc in next 4 sts, sc in next 9 sts, sl st in next 2 sts.

Round 6: sl st in next st, sc in next 3 sts, inc in next 3 sts, sc in next 15 sts, sl st in next 2 sts.

Round 7: sc in next 18 sts, sl st in next 3 sts, sc in next 22 sts, sl st in next 2 sts.

Fasten off and weave ends.

Egg Yolk

Round 1: make 6 sc in magic ring or ch 2 and make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

Round 2: inc in each st.

Round 3: [sc in next st, inc in next st] repeat 6 times around (18 sts)

Round 4: sc around.

Fasten off and leave long tail for sewing. Attach safety eyes and mouth.

Sew yolk to egg white and stuff lightly with fiberfill, not too much but just enough to maintain a round shape.

Assembly

Attach safety eyes and mouth to bacon strip. Now that you have your bacon and egg you’ll want to sew or hot glue to your choice of display (frame, canvas, embroidery hoop etc.). I had an old sweater with a lovely colour to compliment my breakfast art and with a needle and thread I sewed the pieces onto the sweater. An embroidery hoop helped me keep the pieces in place while I sewed. For the arms I used a bit of black yarn, which I stitched into the sweater and onto each side of the bacon and egg and joined the “hands” with a knot.

After figuring out the crochet pattern, this project didn't take much time to make and it's great for using up leftover yarn. I used an old sweater and a rectangular frame (8 x 11 inches) but you could also use canvas, an embroidery hoop, or shadow box to display your breakfast art.
